General Practice Extraction Service

NHS England is commissioning a modern data service from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC), which will involve the extraction of data from GP records in order to support commissioning of services, plan for public health, and conduct research. Further information will be provided in the surgery as it becomes available. The wishes of patients who do not wish their data (NHS number, date of birth, postcode, and gender along with coded information about referrals, NHS prescriptions, and other clinical data) to be extracted in this way will be respected. Seven habits for a healthy life

  •  moderate alcohol consumption
  •  no tobacco smoking
  •  regular exercise
  •  7-8 hours of sleep a day
  •  eat regular meals with no snacking
  •  maintain a moderate body weight
  •  eat breakfast regularly

Lester Breslow, in 1959, showed that a 60y old with all 7 habits would be as healthy as a 30y old with two habits or fewer. Life expectancy for 45y old man with at least 6 of the habits was 11y longer than for a peer with 3 or fewer. Breslow died recently, at 97. He remained robust and well into his 90s. He neither smoked nor drank, was an avid fruit and vegetable gardener, and walked 12-15 miles a week. (Source BMJ 2012)
